Job Summary:  Performs various biological, physical and chemical analyses on municipal wastewater and sludge samples; operates and performs routine maintenance on laboratory equipment used in the analysis of wastewater and sludges; learns and assists in quality control procedures, proper documentation and reporting of laboratory results.
                                                                                                                                                         
Essential Functions:
  1. Performs various biological, physical and chemical analyses on municipal wastewater and sludge samples
  2. Operates and performs routine maintenance on laboratory equipment used in the analysis of wastewater and sludge samples
  3. Learns and assists in quality control procedures, proper documentation and reporting of laboratory results
  4. Cleans and prepares laboratory apparatus and glassware for analyses
  5. Learns and performs the safety procedures in the laboratory setting
  6. Performs other duties as assigned.
 
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  1. Ability to gain thorough knowledge of St. Mary's County Metropolitan Commission policies and procedures
  2. Ability to perform assigned tests and report results accurately
  3. Knowledge of St. Mary's County Metropolitan Commission wastewater system and plant operations
  4. Ability to accurately record and report data
  5. Knowledge of safety regulations and established procedures for handling samples
  6. Ability to operate relevant computer systems, including hardware and software, and office machines

Education and Experience:
  1. Completed at least one college course in biology, environmental science, and/or chemistry.
  2. Currently enrolled on a full or part-time basis at an accredited 2-4 year college or university
  3. Earned at least 24 credit hours
  4. Earned and maintain at least a 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale
  5. Eligible to work in the US
  6. Possess a valid Maryland Driver's license

Physical and Environmental Conditions:
 
Work requires occasional strenuous effort. For example handling of heavy tools, equipment, or materials of 30 to 60 pounds or more. Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of laboratory work place practices with laboratory and office equipment, and/or avoidance of trips and falls, and observance of fire regulations.
