Center for Computational Science (CCS) support staff team member. Maintaining Active Directory servers, users, computers, group policy etc. on numerous domains. Actively troubleshooting/resolving immersive technical issues on Windows server systems. Providing support to other division administrators to troubleshoot and resolve technical problems within their environments.


Diagnosed Windows 10 Home folder redirection to file server failure. Corrected the share & security permissions on the parent folder for user’s home folder. Wrote a script to iterate through all user directories then set each folder with the proper NTFS permission and set the user as the owner of their folder. Reviewed then tested a small subset of computer to force Off Line File Sync. Post testing period rolled out policy for all users.

Maintained Active Directory (AD) domains with 20 Microsoft Windows 2000/2003 Servers. Server applications supported include Microsoft Exchange 5.5 & 2003, SQL Server 7.0, 2000 & 2005, IIS 5.0 & 6.0, Terminal Server, Systems Management Server, Routing and Remote Access Server & Remote Installation Server.


Planned and implemented the migration of an existing Windows NT 4.0 domain to Windows 2003 domain utilizing AD Service, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) & Domain Name System (DNS).  Configured multiple organizational units within AD to compartmentalize the domain objects into logical organizational units that facilitate logical management of the resources, as well as the deployment of software packages/security patches to the proper PC platforms. 


Planned and implemented the upgrade of an Exchange 5.5 organization to Exchange Server 2003. Configured Internet Information Services 6 & Outlook Web Access utilizing Department of Defense (DoD) certificates and common access card authentication to meet DoD requirements. Implemented Exchange client access using remote procedure call (RPC) over HTTPS. 


Participated in the implementation of a 3-tiered firewall (Un-trusted/DMZ/Trusted).


Installed, configured and maintained GFI MailSecurity multi-scan engine email gateway. 


Installed and configured two small AD domain networks from scratch utilizing Microsoft Windows 2000 Server/Advanced Server and Windows 2000 Professional workstations. The work stations were placed behind the multi-homed server, which allowed limited access to and from the Internet via Network Address Translation (NAT) firewall.  Utilized AD to deploy applications and service packs to each desktop, such as Microsoft Office 2000 and Service Pack 2.


Installed, configured and utilized Shavlik HFNetCheck Pro daily to scan all Windows systems for vulnerabilities and schedule the deployment of patches.


Configured a Remote Installation Service (RIS) server to facilitate the rollout of 30 new PC’s with Windows XP, Office 2003 and all patches.


Provide support to other staff members when they need help with customer related PC problems. 


Assisted with the planning and implementation of restructuring 4 domains into one and the migration of email services from a VAX running PMDF and an Exchange 5.5 server to Exchange Server 2003.


Performed numerous server/pc data scrubs due to electronic security spillage incidents with no data loss, one of which included the replacement of 30 plus server hard drives.


Developed a password expiration/user & computer account interrogation application. The application is schedulable and emails users regarding approaching password expirations with an included web link to a change password web page. The application is also capable of interrogating all user/computer account for items such as last logon, password never expires, password is expired etc.  This application has been deployed in numerous domains at the NRL with resounding results.


Developed a message classifications software package that requires end users to classify every email sent. The classification choices are based on a common network shared file.


Developed a nested query application that imports contacts that do not exist in our GAL from the NRL Unix based Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) server. The application imports approximately 4000 contacts in 1 minute and is run nightly to maintain consistency.


Developed a Virtual Private Network (VPN) client that performs anti-virus definition and security patch management on clients when they connect. If anti-virus definitions or patches are not up-to-date they are programmatically pushed and installed on the remote machine.  If the remote machine does not have anti-viral software installed McAfee is deployed to the PC. If the use denies any updates they are logged off the network.

Time spent at GSA involved working on the migration of the Novell File Servers to Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Servers as well as replacing the Windows for Workgroups 3.11 workstations with Windows NT 4.0 systems. This process involved backing up of data on workstations and restoring it to the new systems. After the systems were in place, the remaining time spent at GSA focused on maintaining 4 NT servers (1 Primary Domain Controller / 2 Backup Domain Controllers and 1 Member Server), supporting approximately 200 end users and all of their desktop applications (i.e. Microsoft Office Suites, ccMail, Outlook, a host of specialized applications and database written specifically for GSA needs). As a result of budget constraints I single-handedly supported all 200 users for 1 ½ years. Other responsibilities included daily system backups/restores, hardware troubleshooting server and desktop system hardware, the coordination of all the work at hand, and supervising two other technicians.


Commercial Work

Installed, configured and maintained Microsoft NT 4.0 Servers, Back Office Server, Back Office Small Business Server, Microsoft Office Suites, Novell systems, Windows 3.11, LANtastic, DOS, and Peachtree at different client locations. This work consisted of, but was not limited to, the installation of new network backbones (100Mb and Gigabit Fiber), converting the existing systems from static Internet Protocol addresses or Internetwork Packet Exchange to a DHCP solution. Other duties included the configuration and maintenance of Microsoft Exchange, Internet Information System, Proxy, SQL, Access databases as well as some web design. Installations, configuration and maintenance of Cisco, 3Com, Bay Networks routers/switches as well as broadband internet access points such as Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) and Digital Subscriber Line (DSL).
