This 1883 wood and cast-iron lighthouse once guarded the entrance to the harbor, it is one of four surviving Chesapeake screw-pile lighthouses (there were once 42 in the bay). This classic example of the iconic hex screw head light was moved here and now you can carry the entire light, imagining life as a lighthouse keeper, up the narrow, winding stairs to the top floor, where the Fresnel light shines in its glory.
Calvert's live marine life exhibits include aquariums from sharks to seahorses, lionfish and playful sea otters. Children enjoy seeing stars real sea turtles, snakes, frogs and turtles in their habitat, as well as fossils and paleontological remains. The outdoor display of antique boats ranges from Native American log canoes to early oyster and crab fishing boats, plus historic tour boats like the Tennison, which offers scenic harbor cruises to this day.
Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Art Gallery is a fun, fascinating and vibrant collection of outdoor art and color amid quiet wooded trails. It competes with Seattle's Chihuly Exhibit and the Maine Coastal Botanical Garden in Boothbay for its striking but serene art.
Stroll the Riverwalk and Pavilion on the Lord Baltimore Bay boardwalk along the western shore of Solomons Island Road. This boardwalk offers spectacular views of the Governor James Johnson Bridge, which extends over the Pawtuxent Bridge to St Mary's. The Riverwalk has boat rental shops, ice cream shops, and great selfie opportunities.
Watch fighter pilots fly over nearby Naval Air Station Patuxent, where testing for more than 200,000 air operations takes place at this NAVAIR headquarters. The U.S. Navy's latest and greatest military exercise can be seen with stealth planes and helicopters maneuvering, taking off and landing on five runways at Trapnell Field across the bay. Hop on a sightseeing boat to tour the harbor aboard a Heritage Tour from the Riverwalk, or Half Shell from Charles Street, or Tennison at the Calvert Museum. Lunch at the Lighthouse – This spacious restaurant has an indoor restaurant overlooking the water and a large outdoor space, called the Dock Bar. Try their amazing burgers, crab specialties, you name it, plus local Crush cocktails. A fun and friendly place. The Pier is another fun pierside spot for casual dining. Sample a variety of Maryland wines on tap overlooking the water at Solomon's Island Winery.
The Tiki Bar really captures the island vibe with tropical colors, palm trees, and an open-air beach atmosphere, often with live music.
Charles Street Brasserie is the best place in Solomon's for tapas, especially on Mondays when there are sales. Delicious small plates of Mediterranean-style crab, oysters, shrimp and delicious filets are served as perfect bites to share overlooking the water. The ambiance inside is that of an elegant French bistro, a gem in the heart of Solomon's casual dining scene.
Docking at Spring Cove Marina in Back Creek, well protected and with good services. Dock workers are on hand at this clean, well-maintained marina with a pleasant mix of local seasonal boaters and transients. The marina has a nice pool overlooking the water and VW bus shuttle, a cute little grocery and gift shop on site, and a poolside bar serving cocktails, beers and burgers with sports on the screens. Spring Cove Marina is under new enthusiastic management, very helpful and fun. Sunrise, sunset and moonrise are extraordinary from this peaceful point.
Solomon's Victorian Inn is the ideal location for land-based sailors looking for accommodation, at the head of the harbor, with views of Patuxent Harbor from every window and a classic home-cooked breakfast.
